  • Yield: 1 loaf 1x

Description

Experience the timeless tradition of Italian baking with this Artisan Italian Bread. Crafted with simple, high-quality ingredients and a patient fermentation process, this bread boasts a crisp, golden crust and a tender, airy crumb. Perfect for sandwiches, dipping in olive oil, or enjoying on its own, this loaf brings the authentic flavors of Italy right to your kitchen.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500 grams bread flour
  • 350 milliliters water
  • 10 grams salt
  • 2 grams yeast or sourdough starter

Instructions

  • Mix Dough: In a large bowl, combine the bread flour, salt, and yeast (or sourdough starter). Gradually add the water while stirring until a cohesive dough forms.
  • Knead: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead until it becomes smooth and elastic, approximately 10 minutes.
  • First Fermentation: Place the dough back into the bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it ferment at room temperature for several hours until it has doubled in size.
  • Shape: Gently deflate the dough and shape it into a loaf or your preferred form.
  • Second Proofing: Place the shaped dough on a parchment-lined baking sheet or in a proofing basket. Cover and let it proof for about 1-2 hours, or until it has risen noticeably.
  • Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F). If using a baking stone, place it in the oven during the preheat.
  • Bake: If desired, score the top of the loaf with a sharp blade. Place the bread in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is deep golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Cool: Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack completely before slicing.

Notes

  • For enhanced flavor, consider an overnight fermentation in the refrigerator during the first rise. This slow fermentation develops a deeper, more complex taste.
  • Using a baking stone and adding steam to your oven can improve the bread’s crust. To add steam, place a metal baking pan on the oven floor while preheating. When you put the bread in, pour a cup of hot water into the pan and quickly close the oven door.
  • Experiment with adding herbs like rosemary or thyme into the dough for a flavorful variation.
